This week’s Wellbeing Wrap has is a focus on cancer and prevention.  In our lifetime the vast majority of us will have been touched by cancer in some way.  I’ve lost two grandparents to cancer and have numerous friends and colleagues who’ve had cancers removed or treated.
A dear friend of mine, and a beautiful sole, has terminal cancer, and watching her fight it to give her longer to spend on this earth fills me with admiration.  Many of us raise money for cancer and donate regularly, and research is definitely making significant advances.   There is, however, lots we can do to prevent and combat cancer.

 There are more than 200 different types of cancer, and each is diagnosed and treated in a particular way.  Did you know that in the UK, 1 in 2 people will develop cancer at some point in their lives (NHS).  

The most common types of cancer in the UK are:

Every year, around 360,000 people are diagnosed with the disease. Experts estimate that around 4 in 10 cancer cases could be prevented, largely through lifestyle changes (Cancer Research UK).

Lifestyle causes of cancer include:

  • Smoking can lead to lung, mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix and kidney cancers.  Indeed, even chewing tobacco can lead to cancer of the mouth and surrounding areas.
  • Drinking too much alcohol; regular binge drinking or increased alcohol consumption, increases the risk of breast, colon, lung, kidney and liver cancers.
  • Poor diet leading to unhealthy body weight, fat stores and free radicals which can increase the risk of breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney cancers.
  • Over exposure to sun to can lead to skin cancers, and definitely wrinkles!
  • A lack of exercise, which can prevent us from maintaining a healthy body weight

Tips on a healthier lifestyle:

  • Diet: eat lots of plant based foods (including pulses, beans, fresh fruit and vegetables, mix the colours for maximum nutritional benefit).
    Opting for organic foods means you won’t be introducing chemicals into your body.
  • Diet: processed foods can increase the risk of certain cancers, and often contain lots of added salt and sugar.
  • Diet: in India turmeric has been used for centuries to fight cancer, use it as a spice, in a herbal drink or in supplements (victoriahealth.com)
  • Exercise: aim for at least 30 minutes a day of exercise. For more health benefits, aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity.  You can, of course, combine the two. 
    There’s lots of classes and home fitness available – See my ‘Hit the Fitness‘ Pinterest board for inspiration.
  • Sun: wear bright or dark colours, these reflect more ultraviolet radiation
    (you’re gonna feel warmer, but it’s worth it).
  • Sun: find a shady spot between 11am and 3pm in the UK
  • Sun: use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days.
  • Sun: avoid using sun beds, tanning vessels and sun lamps.
  • Alcohol: the recommended maximum is 14 units of alcohol a week, spread across the week (rather than binged).  There’s lots of alcohol free alternatives, even just a fever tree mediterranean light tonic is a nice alternative, there’s also lots of mocktails and non alcoholic wines to choose from.
  • Give up smoking, for good.  I used to, I gave up, I never looked back.
