Essential oils to relax

I’m going to share a few of my favorite essential oils that can be used to promote relaxation, along with some ways you can use them. 

Lavender promotes calm and peace of mind and is mild sedative which works well for tension or anxiety.   

Bergamot helps to promote a calm mind and smells amazing.

Rose Otto is a great comforter during stressful or emotional times.

Ylang Ylang soothes emotions and creates a sense of calm.

Choose how you want to use your essential oil:

  • Burn in an oil burner
  • Add to a diffuser
  • Add 3-5 drops into a bath
  • Put a few drops under your pillow
  • Add to a massage carrier oil for a neck, back, and shoulder massage

I love Neal’s Yard ‘Relax’ roll on remedy, with blended essential oils, is a great SOS that you can put on pulse points so you get the aroma throughout the day to promote calmness.  I also use their ‘Balancing’ room spray and diffuser in the Flourish therapy room, and in any classes I take, to create a calming atmosphere.

SOS mini meditation

If you’re in a panic, feeling anxious or nervous give this little exercise a try, it’s called ‘Square Breathing’.  The reason for visualising the drawing of a square is that it focuses your mind whilst the breathing calms down your nervous system and ‘fight or flight’ response so your body and brain regain calmness.

  • Breath in deeply for the count of 2 seconds whilst you visualise drawing the first line of a square.
  • Hold the breath in for 2 seconds whilst you visualise drawing the second line of a square, change the colour of each line if you like.  
  • Let the breath out over the count of 2 seconds, whilst you visualise drawing the third line of the square
  • Hold for 2 whilst you visualise drawing the final line.  
  • Repeat as many times as you need to.

Gut reaction

Gut health is a big ticket item right now and I’m totally sold on it.  Looking after your gut pays dividends for a healthy body, and mind.  I love Dr Michael Mosley ‘the clever cuts diet’ book; full of science, facts, and practical tips on getting your gut health back in tip top condition. I can highly recommend this as a read.

One of the ‘must do’s’ is live yogurt, and I can highly recommend ‘Yeo Valley’ (no affiliation).  I mix it up by combining it with all sorts of things for my staple breakfast; different fresh fruits, crushed nuts, seeds, a little honey, homemade granola, dried fruit sprinkles, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger… the list goes on (not all at once, I may add).  Both my husband and myself started this ritual over a year ago now and it’s made a massive difference to my gut health, and it’s such a lovely breakfast to start your day with.  I used to like to indulge in a bacon or sausage sandwich, but i have to say the yogurt and accompaniments is definitely my preference these days.

Book lovers corner

This week I want to draw your attention to the book ‘Ikigia’ by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles.  Ikigai is a Japanese way of life that promotes longevity and happiness. There’s a whole host of goodies in this little book including ‘how to live longer and better by finding your life purpose’, ‘turning work and free time into spaces for growth’ (I definitely don’t need to read this chapter), and ‘Little things that add up to a long and happy life’.  This is where I first heard of ‘Hara Hachi Bu’, the principle of eating until you’re 80% full.  It might sound strange but it really works and you can tell when you’re at 80%; you leave the table feeling nourished without the bloat of uncomfortableness.

Holistic treatment of the week

If you follow my Instagram you’ll know that I’ve recently taken up dancing, tap (after a 10 year break), and salsa.  Last week we were circling partners, it makes you a better dancer apparently.  It also gave me a right pain in the neck, and shoulder, reaching up in hold with taller partners.  Enter a little self reiki and acupressure.  As a reiki practitioner I practice Hatsurei Ho on a regular basis, and this is a wonderful opportunity to re energise and heal my own mind and body.  If you want to give it a go as a meditation it’s really lovely, this is the one I used when I started and it’s by Shinka Reiki Lumie https://youtu.be/RINuCyhe1ZU 

IMG_2500The acupressure point that I used is particularly good for relaxing a stiff neck and shoulders, it’s the hollow space at the top of your neck (bottom of the cranium). Apply a good amount of pressure and, if you want to, apply circular movements.  You do need to be firm.  Hold for about 1 to 2 minutes, repeat until the stiffness/pain has eased.
