Here’s 10 ways to be a Great Leader:
I have spent over 20 years working as a manager, and I would like to think that most of that time I acted as a leader too, but what is the difference and what makes a great leader?
I have coached and mentored both junior leaders and senior leaders from public organisations like the NHS, to private organisations such as Accenture UK and First Direct.
People often ask me what the difference between a manager and a leader is. If you google it, you’ll be presented with a plethora of definitions. This is how I define it; managers get a job done. They take care of staff, schedule, plan, trouble shoot in the moment, they take care of the daily workings of the job to make sure your customers get the best experience of whatever product or services you’re offering. Leaders have an eye on the future, whilst nurturing the present, they should create a shared vision, the opportunities, and the environment, for everything to flourish.
Here’s my top 10 tips on being a great leader:
👑 There’s lots of misconception, and confusion, about what leadership is. Be clear in your mind what the differences are because people will ask you.
👑 Leadership happens at all levels of an organisation, and that should be encouraged.
👑 Authentic leaders know the absolute value of the people who choose to work alongside them. Learn from others. The power of many minds, skills and experience creates a strong business.
👑 Without good values, leadership will fail.
👑 Setting a clear vision, which is shared across the business, is the foundation to success.
👑 Practice genuine compassion. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes will give you a greater perspective of their issues and helps to remove layers of personal bias.
👑 Get your emotional intelligence on! Be present, take notice of what’s going on; what’s being said? What’s not being said?
👑 Never underestimate the power of kindness. People will remember long after the act.
👑 Trust is at the heart of success. Where trust lives, teams thrive, & the speed of action accelerates.
👑 Listen with interest. When you talk, you simply repeat what you already know, but when you listen, you might learn something new. Great leaders know that to be great means you never stop learning, listening, and growing.
